The 1st XI eased into R2 of this year’s 40 over Welsh Cup competition, after comfortably defeating Ynystawe by 9 wickets at Marespool this afternoon.
After winning the toss, our guests’ innings started in breezy fashion as the dangerous Andrew Beasley & Matthew Blake went about mounting the challenge. These two had added 41 in good time before off spinner Sam Harris (1-34) struck. Keeper Chris Matthews pulled off a very smart stumping to remove ‘Buzzer’ Beasley for 11. 34 further runs were added before Jack Straw joined the party and dismissed Blake (52). With the scoreboard now reading 75-2, those present were about to witness an amazing transformation to the match!
Lead by three further stumpings by Chris and some excellent bowling by acting Captain Max Phillips’ four spinners, Ynystawe were efficiently bowled out for 135 in the 37th over! Taking Sam’s lead, Jack (2-17), Max (3-22) and Rahul Shah (3-22, all stumped!) destroyed our visitors innings! Ronnie Runout added the candles to the icing.
After the break, Harri Turner and Chris opened up for the Club. They added 27 before Harri (10, 1 four) was adjudged lbw. Craig Meschede joined Chris and these two entertainers saw to it that no other batsman was required, as they combined to clinch a fine victory inside 24 overs. Chris contributed 57no (5 fours) whilst Craig notched 61no (7 fours & a maximum) to see their side through to the next round! A fine team effort to be sure..well done, boys!
Another home tie looms in Round 2 when Gorseinon visit Marespool on 27th June, start 1pm.
