After losing all cricket to the weather yesterday, the Club eased to victory over Swansea Warriors at Marespool this afternoon (7th) in the Preliminary Round of this year’s Welsh Cup Competition.
Choosing to bat first, our visitors wasted little time, reaching 46 in the 6th over when opener Salman Muzzammal was first out. He had contributed 36 runs (4 fours & 2 sixes) from just 14 balls faced! However, off-spinner all-rounder Greg Thomas had now come on to bowl and the game changed in truly dramatic fashion!
Greg proceeded to take the first 7 wickets to fall! 46-0 to 70-7 within 10 overs!
Teammate Vinnie Sabharwal (2-3 from 4 overs) was also in fine form, taking the next 2 wickets for no extra runs! Finally, Greg chipped in again, finishing with 8-22 from 7 overs! The Warriors finished 70 all out in the 20th over. And, of those 10 wickets, 6 were lbw & 4 were bowled!
After the break, MCC opener Richard Gibby (15, 1 four) was the first to go..25-1 in the 6th over. 8 overs later, the scoreboard read 41 when the third wicket fell.
Sean Davies (29no, 1 four) and Ben Jones (16no, 1 four) saw off any possible danger, however, as they kept cool heads to see the 1st XI over the line in the 23rd over to win by 7 wickets! Great work, lads!
Round One will now see the Club travel to play Swansea by 25th May.
