John Purnell’s retirement as MCC Scorer 2008 – 2021
Many a man is described as being “a true gentleman” but few are as deserving as John Purnell, who very sadly passed away yesterday, the day of our Annual Dinner which he inevitably enjoyed attending.
And he was once again so looking forward to being amongst many friends last night.
John was both a gentleman and a gentle man, with his particular brand of good humour and warm company much valued by all who knew him.
He had been a Vice President of our Club for many years and also the regular scorer for our 1st XI, both at home and away fixtures, for 14 years.
Not one who was looking forward to the digital age of scoring, John retired from his sterling and much appreciated contribution to MCC life on matchdays in 2021. And, apart from a complimentary cuppa and a few sarnies in the match interval, “JP” would never accept any offer of travel expenses!
Our loss but his bowls club’s gain, as they reaped the benefit of his greater availability on Saturdays!
The Club extends it’s heartfelt sympathies to John’s widow Jean, and their family.
Many thanks, John..RIP
