It was another great day at Marespool today (12th) as the 1100 walkers completed their latest remarkable Macmillan Macmarathon efforts in fine sunshine and party atmosphere! With local entertainment and The Wave radio station on hand to add to the fun, social fundraising events at the Club do not get much better than this!
This year’s Annual Round Gower Walk of 22 miles from Rhossilli or 14 from Port Eynon, the eighth to finish at our Club, was another triumph for the local Macmillan organisers as well as for those Club members who helped out during the build up in the week as well as all day today. Thanks so much to all concerned!
Gower Macmarathon 2015 was deemed a tremendous success by Kathryn Morgan, Area Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, South West Wales.
“The walk has come of age and so this year was a very special one for our Gower Macmarathon team, the event has become a permanent fixture on peoples’ calendars. I have seen happy, weary, emotional and exhausted people throughout today, nearly all of whom have told me they have been affected by cancer in some way”.
TEAM OWAIN marched yet again in memory of Owain Baglow, son of MCC members Mike & Sue, brother of 2nd XI batsman Gareth and nephew of MCC Life Member and on-going club stalwart Allan Baglow. This year’s team numbered 31(!) and included MCC members Cameron and Alex Protheroe, John, Marcia & Laura Blyth, Mark and Jen Todd, Carl & Cheryl Lawrence, Josie & Karl Greenwood, Stuart Seaton and Chris & Danielle Nelson.
The Macmarathon is a major fundraising event for Macmillan Cancer Support, and over £110,000 was raised last year alone! TEAM OWAIN has raised nearly £15,000 over the last 4 years, and it hopes to raise a healthy amount again this year for this worthy cause.
If anybody would like to sponsor Allan or any of the walkers in TEAM OWAIN, they shall be extremely grateful as ever. You can still donate via www.justgiving.com/mike-baglow1 or by telephoning Allan on 01792 405526 or 07767 146658.
Swansea Building Society, the headline sponsors for the event, also entered a staff team including Chief Executive Alun Williams who said “ We are delighted to be associated with the Gower Macmarathon for the next 3 years. Having completed the walk today, I have seen for myself that is an extremely well organised event which ultimately raises money to support local people with cancer in the communities we serve”.
Planning will begin for next year and registrations via Macmillan’s website will open from March 2016. For help and support following a cancer diagnosis call 0808 808 0000 or visit www.macmillan.org.uk.
Well done to every single person who was involved today! Top effort all round!
